1. Some Things to Think About
There are a few things that I have thought about that might take a bit of tinkering. If you plan on using a street bike motor you will need to create a linkage so that you can shift the motor effectively. Another thing that may take some tinkering and adjusting is the suspension. The length and angle of the A-arms will probably need to be adjusted a time or two. Axles will need to be built for the rear. It is very possible to use cv axles out of a smaller car such as a Honda Civic or something along those lines. A linkage for the rear independent suspension will also have to be built to withstand the abuse.

You will definitely need to have welding skills and a pipe bender and a torch to get the the pipes hot before bending them.

  2. Plan Your Build

The amount of money and planning needed for a project like this is going to be extremely time consuming and costly. You will want to take the time to gather top of the line materials to prevent failure. The shocks for this project can easily run you $1,000 to get a set of four but they are a must if you plan on jumping the sand rail at all. A motor is a huge part of the project. You should not start building your frame until you have the motor. You won't want to have to cut your frame to modify it because you couldn't find the motor you wanted and had to get something else. your best bet is to get all the parts and materials and go from there. Sketching out an idea for the way you want it to look and how you want your suspension set up isn't a bad idea. It can help you in the long run and  can save you some time. When it comes time to actually building the frame, the tabs and bracketry for your suspension, A-arms, shocks, etc. you should always triple check your measurements and placement of your weld. If you don't, you may be creating a lot more work for yourself. That is why planning is very important.

  3. Custom Sand Rails

There are a few things needed to keep in mind when building a custom sand rail. First you will need to have an idea of how you want it to look and the type of suspension you will want to use. Most people like to run an independent setup that also has a large amount of travel. This is where all four wheels can move independently from one another and do not have articulation restrictions because of an axle. Another thing that will need to be considered is what type of motor you will be using. Sand rails can be built in many sizes. Some people use inline turbo charged four cylinder Subaru motors. Other people build smaller, one seat, buggies that have a Suzuki GSX-R 1000cc motor and turbo charge that. Supercharged V8's are also popular power plants for the bigger, four seat, machines. The sky really is the limit when it comes to creating your own sand rail. If you are plan on building one, you better start saving your pennies.
